Everyone, or nearly everyone,
reports daydreaming on a regular basis,
with studies indicating that as many as 96% of adults
engage in having at least one bout of daily fantasies.

Daydreaming, in scientific theory, is a temporary separation from reality. This brief separation brings people into a fantasy world. Unlike dreams at night, daydreaming is an act of fantasy when people are awake. For a long time, a huge number of people have held a negative attitude towards daydreaming, which is often associated with unreality and lack of practical motivation. Almost everyone in our lives has been warned not to daydream by our parents or teachers. In fact, people daydream less as they get older. Although I was always told by my parents to stop daydreaming and spend more time on practical things. I’m still curious about daydreaming. Why do people daydream? Is it true that daydreaming can only bring about negative effects? How do daydreams come into being and work? These questions prompted me to choose daydreaming as my topic.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve asked a lot of people around me what they think about daydreaming. Most people hardly ever think about daydreaming. Daydreaming is almost ignored in our life. Most people think that daydreaming is just a kind of fantasy for the future and can’t bring any help to our actual life. Especially for middle-aged people, such as my parents.

Daydreaming isn’t always bad. Daydreaming can bring a lot of beneficial influence to us, but overindulging in daydreaming also will bring the bad influence to our normal life. We need to daydream correctly and moderately.

it matter ?

Almost everyone daydream, the  research shows that 96 percent of adults daydream at least once a day. Most people are curious about how daydream works in our brain, dreaming related with the fontal cortex, the limbic system, and several other cortical areas involved in sensory experiences. Today, neuroscientists call it “default network” of brain, while active, the default network turns itself on and generates its own stimulation.”  Simply,  a product of the default network is “stimulus independent thought,” namely daydreaming.

There are enormous evidence proves that the default network is existing to help us to explore our inner world. Daydreaming is help us to explore our inner world. Specifically, it helps us to understand what other people are thinking, then help us to make moral decision. Our daydreaming relates to our past experience and imaging with future. Daydreaming is like a blueprint that we image in our mind.

The effect of daydreaming on our psyche may depend, furthermore, on the nature of our daydreams. In a series of questionnaire studies, York University psychologist Raymond Mar and associates (2012) asked men and women ranging from 18 to 85 to report on the frequency and vividness of their daydreams as well as their life satisfaction, levels of loneliness, and social support. For men, the more frequent their daydreams, the lower their life satisfaction. For women, vividness but not frequency was related to lower life satisfaction.

we used to only know about the negative effects of daydreaming, which can affect our attention and make us unable to concentrate on one thing. we have little idea about the positive effects of daydreaming. In fact, daydreaming can help us solve complex problems. And daydreaming is

an important way for people to relax their minds. Short daydreams can help people focus better on what’s next. The most important thing is that daydreaming can make us more creative. When we daydream, we are in a diffused thinking mode, which can help us think more broadly. Daydream is really important, especially when you are an artist or designer.  Daydream is a diffused thinking mode, it can practice our brain to quick response.

Practicing daydream can help designers to develop their project, they may get unexpected ideas in a daydream. Daydreaming is to find a connection between two totally different things, in which people don’t have to consider reality. This thinking mode is quite different from habitual thinking mode. There is no limitation in a daydream. Daydreaming is like an exploration of our unconsciousness. I always imagine that my mind is a boundless sea. Daydream is like a journey without a destination because I don’t know where I gonna go, I can go anywhere.

The daydream connected with our mental health. It provides a small break which can help people to combat fatigue and tension during the day because it allows individual cognitively and effectively disengage from their work demands. Daydreaming can help people to get the mental health benefits of a break. Especially the one that allows you to unfocus and then refocus, can be one of the best ways to become better at what you’re doing. Daydreaming refresh our mind, which can help people to release the pressure of work or study.

How to practice daydream?

A. Getting start

a.   Allow yourself to daydream

For a long time, most people hold a negative attitude to daydream, because they think that daydreaming is a waste of time. People refuse to daydream, they feel guilt after a daydream. Studies show that daydream is as bad as people think, oppositely it can help us be more creative and motive. So don’t be afraid to daydream.

b.   Choose a quiet environment

Before you start a daydreaming, try to find a quiet and peaceful place, which can help us to focus attention. Good daydreaming is an efficient way to work to eliminate tension, to relieve the pressure.

c.   Daydream in a positive direction

Not every daydreaming has a positive effect, there are several types of daydreams. A negative daydream often makes us aggressive and annoy(for example, taking revenge on people who you don’t like). However, unlike night dream our daydream is doing in a lucid mind. We can try to daydream in a positive direction.

B. Knowing what to  dream about

a.   Daydream about your future

Let yourself to imaging who you will be in the future, be free to think about it. Everything is possible in your daydream. Write down what you have daydreamed after your daydream, and make it as your goal. Daydreaming with a goal can increase your motivation to achieve it.

b.   Daydream about what you love

Dream about things that can make you happy, such as certain people, places, food. Daydream things that you love can increase your happiness, even can motivate you in your work and study. Daydreaming even can help us to fight difficulties in real life, it brings us hope.

Electronic products fill up almost all our spare time every day. When you find you have free time between classes or work projects do a daydream to relax your mind instead of playing your phone or computer. Daydreaming refreshes your mind can be one of the best ways to help you refocus on what you are doing.

b.   Daydream when you doing exercise

It is a good chance to daydream when you are doing exercise, especially do a solitary sport( for example, running, swimming and jogging). You can use this time to think about whatever you’d like. There is no one can disturb your mind.

c.   Daydream in the morning and at night

Most of us like to snuggle in bed when we wake up in the morning, while you can imagine what you will do in the day. Every night we often take a while to get in sleep, during this time you can review what we have done today, then daydream the next wonderful day.
